The East Lansing Food Co-op is more than a grocery store: it is a consumer-owned cooperative business. What does that mean? A cooperative business is democratically owned and controlled by the people who use it. Our Co-op currently has over 4,000 community members and shoppers who have financially invested in the store, and thus are Co-op owners. Unlike a business owned by an individual, family, or corporation, profits from the store may be returned to our owners or used to help the store better serve the community’s needs. ELFCO believes in a triple-bottom-line approach to business, which means that we judge success not only by our financial security, but also by our positive social and environmental impact. We strive to support those community organizations that do the same. That’s how your dollar does more to support the local economy when you shop at ELFCO!
Who shops here? Everyone does! Our customers are vegetarians and meat-eaters, owners and non-owners, people with food allergies or restricted diets, foodies and non-foodies, and those who want to purchase locally-made products and support community empowerment. Really, anyone and everyone is welcome to join us at the store or in our newly remodeled community rooms for classes and events. We strive to bring you the best, freshest, and tastiest healthy, organic, and local food in the area at reasonable prices.
What will I find at the co-op? ELFCO is a full-service natural foods grocery store. Stop in and you’ll find your usual departments including produce, grocery, beer & wine, bulk, refrigerated, frozen, health & wellness, and more. We are especially proud of all the local Michigan-made products we carry –everything from staple items like local milk, butter, and bread to specialty items like artisanal kimchi from Ann Arbor and stilton cheese from Charlotte. Just look for the red local shelf tags below your favorite Michigan products, including over 90 varieties of Michigan craft beer and wine.
What sort of payment do we accept? When you are ready to check out, you are welcome to use cash, check, credit or debit cards, and SNAP (EBT) food assistance benefits. We also have gift certificates available for purchase to help you share the love with friends and family.
Can I shop here? Absolutely! Everyone is invited to shop at the Co-op. Just come on in and do your grocery shopping as you would at any other store. If you can’t find what you need or would like some assistance, just ask a friendly staff member. We love to help, and we hope to see you soon.
